Planning a Meaningful Maternity Photography Session

When Jeff and Sofie first reached out, they were filled with excitement about welcoming their first child. Naturally, they wanted maternity photos that captured their joy and anticipation forever. Like many expecting couples, they wanted something beautiful and meaningful. However, they were unsure where to take maternity photos. That is where we stepped in to help guide the process.

Choosing a maternity photo location is about more than finding a scenic backdrop. Instead, it is about creating a space where expectant parents feel comfortable, supported, and safe. Pregnancy can bring mobility challenges, which must always be considered first. Therefore, the key to great maternity photography is understanding these needs and planning accordingly. As a result, we choose locations offering stunning scenery with easy access. This approach ensures maternity photos feel beautiful, safe, and truly memorable.

Choosing the Perfect Maternity Photo Location in Thunder Bay

When we began planning Jeff and Sofie’s maternity session, we explored several creative ideas. From the start, they shared a love for natural landscapes. They wanted a setting that felt peaceful, open, and full of Thunder Bay charm. After some thoughtful back and forth, we chose Chippawa Park. Ultimately, it proved to be the perfect location.

Chippawa Park offers stunning views of the Sleeping Giant and Lake Superior. In addition, it features forests, water, and open spaces for visual variety. More importantly, the park is extremely practical for maternity photography. There are multiple parking areas, well-maintained trails, and accessible public washrooms. These details make a meaningful difference during a maternity shoot. As a result, we moved easily between locations without long walks. This allowed us to capture diverse images without added stress.

Embracing the Unexpected Weather

The weather that day was cool, damp, and unpredictable. Not exactly the conditions most people hope for, but sometimes those are the days that give you the most character. The sky had a soft, moody glow to it—one of those looks you can’t plan for, but when it shows up, it’s pure magic. The light wrapped everything in a calm, cinematic feel that suited the session perfectly.

Staying Warm, Relaxed, and Connected

We made things comfortable by using our cars as cozy warming stations between shots. It seems like a small thing, but it made a huge difference. Jeff and Sofie were able to warm up, relax, and reset between locations, which kept the energy light and fun. No rushing, no stress—just lots of laughter and genuine moments in between frames.

Capturing the Emotion Behind the Moment

And the photos? They radiated love. There’s something incredibly powerful about photographing people who are fully present—excited, a little nervous, and dreaming about what’s ahead. That’s exactly what we saw in Jeff and Sofie’s eyes. You could feel the connection between them, the anticipation of meeting their little one, and the quiet joy of stepping into this next chapter together.
