Proposal Photography in Thunder Bay: Capturing Samantha & Jessica’s Love Story

At Kirvan Photography + Film, we specialize in unforgettable photo and film memories for weddings, engagements, and proposals.
Whether you are planning a proposal or preserving shared love, we guide you through every step.
Recently, one of our favourite sessions featured Samantha and Jessica, an Ottawa couple traveling through Thunder Bay.
However, Samantha wanted a surprise proposal but was unsure how to bring the idea to life.
Therefore, we stepped in and worked closely with her to plan the perfect proposal photography session.
As a result, the Thunder Bay proposal felt natural, meaningful, and truly magical for both partners.

Below, you can see how we helped Samantha create a proposal Jessica will never forget.

Choosing the Perfect Proposal Location in Thunder Bay

Without a doubt, Thunder Bay offers stunning landscapes, making it an ideal destination for a proposal.
From the start, Samantha wanted a location that felt both scenic and intimate.
Specifically, she hoped to surprise Jessica in a setting that felt meaningful and private.
Afterward, we explored several options together before choosing a beautiful waterfall location.
As a result, the waterfall provided a serene and picturesque backdrop for the proposal.

Choosing the right location is essential for setting the mood and creating lasting memories.
For example, a Lake Superior sunset offers dramatic views and bold natural beauty.
Meanwhile, a hidden forest location creates a quieter and more personal atmosphere.
In this case, we selected a spot blending Thunder Bay’s beauty with calm and tranquility.
Ultimately, the proposal felt romantic, personal, and perfectly suited to Samantha and Jessica.

Planning the Surprise: Keeping the Proposal a Secret

At the heart of every great proposal shoot is the element of surprise.
In this case, Samantha wanted Jessica to be completely caught off guard.
To achieve this, we worked closely with Samantha to create a natural, unsuspecting plan.
First, we met the couple as their “tour guides” for the day.
Then, we showed them several of Thunder Bay’s most beautiful locations.
Meanwhile, we casually photographed them, making it feel like a relaxed couple’s session.

When planning your own proposal photography session, it’s important to keep the surprise intact.
For example, you might hide the photographer or pose them as a tour guide.
Alternatively, you could plan a casual photo session, just like we did here.
Ultimately, there are many creative ways to protect the surprise while capturing genuine emotion.

Capturing the Perfect Moment: When the Question Is Popped

Once everything is in place, it’s finally time to pop the question. As we continued wandering through Thunder Bay’s lush landscapes, we carefully timed each step, giving Samantha the space to choose the perfect moment to propose. Then, as soon as she dropped down on one knee, we were ready—capturing Jessica’s stunned reaction as it turned into pure joy.

This is the moment when emotions truly take over, and being able to preserve those raw, heartfelt reactions is priceless. From the initial gasp, to tears of joy, and finally the excited “yes,” these are memories that will last a lifetime. In this case, the waterfall created a romantic and timeless backdrop for Samantha and Jessica’s proposal, adding an extra layer of magic to an already unforgettable moment.
